Spatial Reasoning with Topological Information

چکیده
This chapter summarizes our ongoing research on topological spatial reasoning using the Region Connection Calculus. We are addressing di erent questions and problems that arise when using this calculus. This includes representational issues, e.g., how can regions be represented and what is the required dimension of the applied space. Further, it includes computational issues, e.g., how hard is it to reason with the calculus and are there e cient algorithms. Finally, we also address cognitive issues, i.e., is the calculus cognitively adequate.

Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
متن کاملAn Integrated Model for Fuzzy Topology and Qualitative Distance for Discrete Space
The topological relationship of disjoint is ubiquitous in physical world, while the traditional topological relationship models do not take more considerations about it. Point set topology is exhaustive for topological relation set and rational for topological computation; nevertheless, it is not good at spatial reasoning. Although RCC5 or RCC8 is competent for spatial reasoning, it is not fit ...
متن کاملEnriching the Qualitative Spatial Reasoning System RCC8
The field of qualitative spatial reasoning is now an active research area in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and also in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Different kinds of spatial relations play an important role in spatial reasoning, spatial analysis, and query languages for geospatial databases. GIS and image databases are often based on the description of relations between spatial regio...
متن کاملQualitative Spatial Reasoning Using Real Algebraic Geometry
Commonsense reasoning is a major challenge in Artificial Intelligence (AI). As qualitative descriptions comprise a great deal of our everyday language, commonsense reasoning is concerned with developing and processing such qualitative representations. This applies especially to commonsense reasoning about space, where spatial objects are in particular characterized by their spatial relations to...
متن کاملQualitative Spatial Reasoning for Topological Map Learning
In this article we investigate the application of qualitative spatial reasoning methods for learning the topological map of an unknown environment. We develop a topological mapping framework that achieves robustness against ambiguity in the available information by tracking all possible graph hypotheses simultaneously. We then exploit spatial reasoning to reduce the space of possible hypotheses...
متن کاملCombining Topological and Directional Information for Spatial Reasoning
Current research on qualitative spatial representation and reasoning usually focuses on one single aspect of space. However, in real world applications, several aspects are often involved together. This paper extends the well-known RCC8 constraint language to deal with both topological and directional information, and then investigates the interaction between the two kinds of information. Given...
